How Did You Know Your Achilles Tendon Was Broken?

Achilles tendon rupture is a very serious traumatic injury. If it happens, you will find many excellent players and occasional video scenes where players are interrupted. Achilles tendon can easily become the most powerful tendon in the body, which will be under great pressure when passing through two joints(ankle joint and knee joint). If both joints can bend in the opposite direction, the calf muscles may also catch fire, so it is not difficult to observe how the tendon load is torn. When you reach the age of 40, this is more common in sports such as basketball and tennis. Such dramatic injuries are usually less painful.

Fracture diagnosis is relatively easy. This usually depends directly on the mechanism and mode of damage. There is usually a perceptible noise, and the calf muscles will lose power immediately. In the most serious case, there may be space in the tendon. The Thompson test can usually be done. This test involves the patient lying face down with their feet suspended at the end of the evaluation table, allowing the clinician to compress the calf muscles. If the tendons are not damaged, the feet will move. If the tendons can break and the calf muscles are squeezed, the foot will not bend. Another test, called the O’Brien Finn Test, involves inserting a small needle in the upper part of the Achilles tendon to move the foot. If the Achilles tendon is broken, the needle cannot move. This kind of evaluation is not used very much today. Because many cases of hypothetical tear have been examined, which may be diagnosed by ultrasonic examination.

Once confirmed, there are two main options for the treatment of Achilles tendon rupture. One is surgery, the other is conservative. However, the first treatment should begin immediately. Use ice to control inflammation. It may be possible to use walking clamps to relieve the load on the Achilles tendon. The following treatment options depend on the preferences and personal wishes of the managing clinician. All research data show that there is no difference in the final results between the current surgical and non surgical methods. The surgical strategy allows players to recover more quickly, but the risks associated with any surgical treatment will also increase. Non operative methods include the use of walking clamps to limit foot and ankle movement. Whatever strategy is used, rehabilitation is important. It is very important to recover the load as soon as possible to increase the Achilles tendon stress. After walking, in order to develop the strength of Achilles tendon and calf muscles, gradual overload training is required. The final step in rehabilitation is to develop a strategy for slowly resuming exercise. If this process goes wrong, the possibility of injury recurrence will be greater.
